International Women's Day is
celebrated each year on March 8th.
As Sunday was International Women's Day and today is Witchcraft Wednesday here on the blog - I thought I'd honour both days with a post about Morgan Le Fey...
Mist coils over Avalon, where the waters are deep, and the air shivers with enchantment. Among its spectral mists stands Morgan le Fay, a name whispered in fear, reverence, and dark fascination - a woman whose legend refuses to die. She is not merely a sorceress, nor simply a fairy, nor even just a witch. She is all of these and more, shifting through centuries like the tide, weaving magic that lingers in the bones of Arthurian myth.
The name Morgan finds its roots in Old Welsh - Morgen or Morcant, linked to the sea, fate, and illusion. Some interpretations suggest it means “Sea-born” or “Great Queen”, fitting for a woman who stands between worlds, myths, and the shifting tides of destiny. Though some tales paint her as simply an enchantress, Morgan is woven deeply into the fabric of witchcraft. Unlike Merlin, who pulls magic from the elements and prophecy, Morgan’s power is willful, personal, and bound to transformation.
Morgan and Merlin dance through Arthurian legend in a strange, tangled rivalry. Some accounts claim he taught her magic, making her his equal, his student, his ultimate undoing. In later medieval texts, she turns against Merlin, using his own arts against him, much like the sorceress Nimue, who ensnares him in eternal slumber. In other versions, their relationship is less hostile, more woven in secrets, warnings, and whispered fates.
Morgan le Fay is Arthur’s half-sister, tied to his blood, to his kingdom, and ultimately, to his downfall. She is the last face he sees, the one who carries his dying form through the mists, the silent guardian who leads his broken body to Avalon, ensuring he reaches the realm beyond life, where kings are neither buried nor truly forgotten.
Morgan is not merely legend - she is a specter that lingers in the echoes of Avalon, where the world softens into shadow, and magic where magic never dies.
